The exhibition "Looted Art – 10 Stories" reveals the complex struggles of museums with stolen art. At the Mauritshuis, three periods of art theft are highlighted: the French Revolution in 1795, the Nazi theft of Jewish property, and colonial plunder. Virtual reality allows you to discover the hidden history behind these objects. The artist duo Jongsma + O'Neill uses video installations and digital techniques to make tangible how this painful legacy continues to resonate today.
This exhibition is not about the beauty or cultural value of the objects, but about the raw, unexpected, and complex stories they carry. What you see is not always what it seems—this confusion forms the core of the design. Objects like Rembrandt's portrait and the Kris are presented low, while the Quadriga head is positioned high, as in the VR experience. This blurs the lines between reality and virtuality.
The space is bathed in "digital lavender": a color that initially disorients but gradually feels more neutral. This immediately sets the tone—this is no ordinary exhibition. The design evokes the atmosphere of a storage space, making the enormous scale of art theft tangible, despite the limited number of objects on display. Empty blocks symbolize the absent works, the art that remains hidden.
