The exhibition "Infected!" at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave offers a fascinating glimpse into the delicate balance between health and actual risk, and between social exclusion and empathy. How did we deal with epidemics like the plague and smallpox in the past? And what lessons can historical epidemics offer us for the present and the future?
The exhibition was conceived before the coronavirus outbreak. The original concept centered on the outbreak of a hypothetical, unknown disease X, which served as a central thread for visitors throughout the exhibition. However, reality overtook this scenario, necessitating last-minute adjustments to the content and design. Visual language, consciously chosen before the pandemic, took on a completely new meaning during the exhibition's run.
