Arita Ceramics Symposium
Role
Creative concept development, Experience design, Graphic design
The Arita Ceramics Symposium took place in November 2016 in Arita, Japan, a region renowned for its rich ceramic tradition. This book, a record of the symposium, was designed as a gift for the speakers and organizers, documenting the shared knowledge about ceramics between different cultures.
The brief was to design a bilingual book, in both English and Japanese, that would be a true collector's item. The cover depicts the top of a ceramic bowl, symbolizing the conversation about ceramics, while the back features a 3D-cast bottom of a bowl, representing the process of its making. This arrangement makes the book appear to float when placed on a table, supported by a specially designed large spiral.
Inside, the paper gradually changes from 300 grams to 80 grams, symbolizing the versatility of ceramics—from thick and strong to thin and fragile. With 400 pages and a custom-made spiral, this book is truly unique. Only 35 units were produced, making it a true collector's item.
